The purpose of the study was to use economic analysis in determining the ability of a small strip mining company to incure the financial burden of carrying out various alternative mine drainage abatement programs. The quantity and quality of water with which the company has to deal were determined and treatment and diversion programs were costed out. The company's market area and the market structure were analyzed. It was found that pricing policies were determined by a dominant firm, so the target company had no control over its price per ton of coal. The costs and revenue of the firm were analyzed for the period 1960-1970 and, even without a water quality program, losses were incurred in six out of eleven years. Analysis of the average cost curve indicates that the per unit cost could have been reduced by increasing output thereby increasing efficiency. The conclusions of the study were that the small company could not unilaterally implement mine drainage programs because the added costs would seriously worsen its already precarious financial position. Even uniformly enforced legislation might reduce the small firms competitive position because of economies of scale associated with the large treatment facilities used by big mining companies. 相似文献

Zebra finches with tail-elongations left perches during induced take-offs consistently later than unmanipulated controls. Latency in take-off was the same for both a short pintail-elongation (27% of finch long-axis) and an extreme pintail-elongation (49% of finch long-axis). There was no evidence for artificial pintails increasing energy expenditure, as predicted by flight aerodynamics models. Neither flight metabolic rate determined using the doubly labelled water technique, nor resting metabolic rate or food intake rates were affected. Hence, the energetic costs of elaborate pintails seem likely to be small and perhaps biologically trivial. In contrast, pintails appear to confer a manoeuvrability cost, as found in previous studies of long tails. Latency in take-off may be induced by an increased risk of collision with conspecifics during group take-offs and landings. Alternatively, latency may represent a change of predator-avoidance strategy, because taking off within the group does not minimise predation risk when handicapped by tail-elongation. The effects of tail-elongation are likely to be context-dependent and may differ between solitary species and more gregarious species that fly or forage in flocks.Communicated by W. Wiltschko 相似文献

Bottom sediment and suspended sediment samples from Hamilton Harbour (western Lake Ontario) and from a major tributary were profiled using a bioassay-directed fractionation approach. Sample extracts were fractionated using an alumina/Sephadex gel clean-up procedure to afford non-polar aromatic fractions which were characterized using chemical analyses and the Ames/microsome bacterial assay in Salmonella typhimurium strains YG1025 with the addition of oxidative metabolism (S9), and YG1024 without S9. Non-polar aromatic fractions of selected samples were separated by normal phase HPLC into 1-min fractions which were subjected to bioassay analyses. The bioassays using strain YG1025+S9, a TA100-type strain, were performed to assess genotoxicity arising from the presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). Fractions which exhibited mutagenic activity contained PAH with molecular masses of 252, 276 and 278 amu; these fractions contained over 80% of the genotoxicity attributable to PAH. Individual compounds identified using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry analyses in these active fractions included benzo[a]pyrene, indeno[cd]pyrene and dibenz[a,h]anthracene. The YG1025+S9 mutagenic activity profiles were similar for all samples. Mutagenic activity profiles generated using strain YG1024-S9, a TA98-type strain sensitive to compounds characteristic of mobile source emissions, were very different. The mutagenic activities in strain YG1024-S9 were greatest for harbour-suspended sediment samples collected from sites impacted by a major tributary. Suspended sediments collected near areas known to contain high levels of coal tar-contamination in the bottom sediments contained higher levels of genotoxic PAH than suspended sediments collected from other areas of the harbour. 相似文献

The relationship between stream water quality and landscape activities is difficult to evaluate where the principal source of stream flow is ground water seepage because the average travel time from ground water recharge areas to stream discharge positions can be on the order of decades. We tested the idea that past and future baseflow water quality can be predicted based on a synoptic survey of ground water recharge age-dates (based on chlorofluorocarbon [CFC] measurements) and water quality measurements obtained at the ground water-surface water interface. In this study we (i) characterize the discharge-weighted age distribution and water quality of ground water seepage into the Little Plover River (LPR); (ii) use this information to backcast and forecast baseflow NO(3)(-) concentrations; and (iii) evaluate NO(3)(-) backcasts against historical baseflow data (1960 to 2000). The discharge-weighted apparent CFC age of ground water seepage into the LPR was 23.7 (+/-7) yr. Baseflow backcasts matched the four decade rise of baseflow NO(3)(-) from 2 to 8 mg L(-1). Baseflow forecasts included three scenarios. Scenario A projects the historical rise of NO(3)(-) in the LPR basin's ground water recharge through 2050. Scenario B projects a leveling off of NO(3)(-) in ground water recharge in the year 2000. Scenario C projects a leveling off in the year 1985. Under Scenario A, LPR baseflow NO(3)(-) will increase steadily from 8 to 19 mg L(-1) between 2000 and 2050. Under scenarios B and C baseflow NO(3)(-) will plateau at 13 mg L(-1) in 2030 and at 10 mg L(-1) in 2010, respectively. The approach developed in this study can be used to (i) reconstruct historical baseflow water quality patterns in the absence of long-term monitoring data and (ii) project the effects of potential management decision on future water quality. 相似文献

The National Phosphorus Project rainfall simulator was used to quantify overland flow and P transport from nine sites distributed throughout the watershed of a New York City Watershed Agriculture Program collaborating dairy farm. Observed concentrations of total dissolved phosphorus (TDP) were low (0.007-0.12 mg L(-1)) in flow from deciduous forest, extensively managed pasture, and hillside seeps; moderate (0.18-0.64 mg L(-1)) in flow from intensively managed pastures, a hayfield, and a cow path; and extremely high (11.6 mg L(-1)) in flow from a manured barnyard. Concentrations of TDP from sites without fresh manure were strongly correlated with soil test P (TDP [mg L(-1)] = 0.0056 + 0.0180 x Morgan's soil test phosphorus [STP, mg kg(-1)]; R2 = 84%). Observed concentrations of suspended solids were low (16-137 mg L(-1)) in flow from vegetated sites, but were higher (375-615 mg L(-1)) in flow from sites with little ground cover (barnyard, cow path, plowed field). Under dry summer conditions the time to observed overland flow was shorter (<18 min) for nonfield areas (seeps, barnyard, cow path) than for field and forest areas (27-93 min), indicating that hydrologically active nonfield areas of minor spatial extent but with high soil P (e.g., cow paths and barnyards) can play a significant role in summertime P loading. When soils started from field capacity (second-day) time to overland flow was uniformly less than 23 min, indicating that under wet watershed conditions low-P source areas can dilute overland flow from concentrated sources. 相似文献

The large number of chemical spills each year in the United States presents a potentially significant risk to human health and the environment. In an effort to manage this risk, the authors are developing a screening tool to assess the immediate threat to human and environmental receptors from land-based chemical spills. As part of this development effort, a modified Delphi survey was employed to determine the most important factors governing this risk and the relative importance of these factors. Results of the survey indicate that accounting for the attributes of the spilled chemical as well as the characteristics of the surrounding environment is imperative in making informed decisions regarding spill planning and mitigation. Survey results further indicate the greatest concern during spill events to be the risk to human health, which must be considered directly as well as factored into decisions concerning the protection of environmental receptors. 相似文献

Little is known on how management of Russian native grasslands affects botanical composition, soil and forage properties. Three fields were sampled in the V.V. Alekhin Central-Chernozem Biosphere State Reserve in the Kursk region of Russia: a native grassland (not cultivated for at least 300 years), a grazed/hay field with 4 years of annual harvest followed by 1 year of rest (periodically-cut grazed/hay field), and a yearly-cut grazed/hay field. Soil samples were collected from the top 10 cm and analyzed. Plant species were identified at the sampling sites and this plant material was used to determine total elemental analysis of forage, crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), in vitro true digestibility (IVTD) and lignin concentrations. Above-ground live and dead plant material and roots were analyzed for C, N and lignin. Soil sample analysis showed that fields were comparable in terms of soil chemical and physical properties. SOC and N contents were not statistically different in the native and yearly grazed/hay fields. Soil bulk density significantly increased as a result of utilization, from 0.80±0.09 Mg m−3 for the native grassland to 0.97±0.06 Mg m−3 for the yearly grazed/hay field. A total of 107 different plant species were recorded at the three fields. There were changes in plant composition among the fields. The native grassland field had the least number of plant species (41) followed by the yearly-cut grazed/hay field (68), and the periodically-cut grazed/hay field (87). There was a greater proportion of grass species (20%) in the native grassland field. Dead plant biomass and roots from the grazed/hay fields were higher in N and lignin concentrations. Forage mineral concentration was highest in the periodically-cut hay field. No significant differences were observed in terms of forage properties. 相似文献
